When I'm in the mood for Mediterranean food, Mr. Gyro always comes to mind. They're kind of the On the Border of gyros and falafel; everything's sort of Americanized but it's safely predictable. And besides, Mr. Gyro introduced me to galaktoboureko (ya-lak-tah-bore-i-ka) , a yummy custard-filled baklava-like dessert that's hard to pronounce but very, very easy to eat. The cafe style lends the restaurant a fast-food like atmosphere, but the food is a notch or two above that. You never have to wait too long for your order, and frankly the fare is better than that at some of the sit-down Mediterranean restaurants in the area. The order line goes pretty fast too, so when you get to the counter don't forget to order dessert. The galaktoboureko alone makes the trip to Mr. Gyro's worthwhile.

I like it when i get the slightly chard caramelized meat from outside of the cone. Simple gyro, onion tomato and tzatziki sauce with a side of feta and olives. Get a humus to go for an afternoon snack. The place is super clean, think hospital, the staff is friendly, only downside would be the dining room atmosphere, very fast foodish with the Greek tourism propaganda loop running on the flat screens, but they serve really good food so i keep going back.

This is one of my wife and I's favorite places to eat. We find outselves grabbing a carry out once a week. The salads and gyros are excellent quality and the service is always top notch. Food is very constant and I very much enjoy their deserts. My only question is why... why must you be closed on sundays and deny me my craving when I just happen to suggest My Gyros for dinner only to discover it's Sunday. It's just not fair.

Yum! Now that I've moved to OP suburbia, this place is officially going to be affectionately dubbed "hibachi's southside little cousin." The gyro's are delicious, the price is right, and they serve beer!

In what has been a recurring theme this week, I skipped a meal and came home from work famished. Stella, my wife, was not very hungry after a Mi Ranchito lunch so I was going to be stuck with some takeout. I couldn't decide on anything, I was in the sandwichy mood. Stella said that she would eat a gyro from Mr. Gyros if I wanted to go there. I had never been to Mr. Gyros before this evening but I'm a pretty big fan of the pita. The Mr. Gyro's website is quite lacking in detail and not being an aficionado of Greek food, I didn't know really what to order. Luckily, I was hungry so more in the mood to be experimental. Stella told me to get a regular gyro sandwich. The counter service at Mr. Gyro's was friendly and fun. The girl was probably under 18 but she was playful, smart and fun. Not your typical help at a fast food type place. My gyros were ready within a minute or two, I was actually quite surprised at the speed of service. I brought the gyros home and was genuinely surprised at the amount of meat on the gyro. It was quite the site, the pita was barely big enough to hold the meat. It is a nice touch that the sauce comes on the side so you can add as much or as little as you like. The other toppings can be picked off just as easily, if you so desire. The beef was just a little more salty than I would prefer and the sauce was not necessarily my taste. Overall the gyro was quite wonderful and a mouthful of flavor. At the height of my hunger, I couldn't quite finish the whole thing. This may be a don't miss item in Johnson County and the definite starting point for Greek food in the county.

My favorite and only Gyro place to eat. I believe that about says it all. I'm by far from a true Greek eater. This fast food greek sandwich shop is just great for me. Best part is the usual discount of gyro sandwich and small salad at lunch time.

Mr. Gyros has become a staple of my diet. I can't go longer than a couple of weeks without it. Gyro meat is right up there with Bacon for me and Mr. Gyros does a consistently great job. I used to do the Gyro Plate; meat, tomatoes, onion, pita, feta, olives, and tzakiti sauce. But have starting going with their special (always the same), Gyro sandwich and a Greek salad for $7.75. The Gyro sandwich is the same as the plate only the pita isn't cut up and it doesn't come with feta or olives. Never tried the desserts but they look great. Its worth noting that on one occasion I saw a worker taking the baklava out of a Sams Club looking container leading me to believe that at least some of the desserts may be store bought. If you can find a more consistent tasty gyro, let me know.

I am a gyro snob. Growing up in Chicago I got to eat some of the best gyro in the planet, except for of course Greece where I have never been. I tried the Gyro platter which has more meat and I was amazed. All of the pieces were thick and juicy. The sauce was just strong enough, the veggies were fresh and the pita not bad at all. They also gave a very healthy helping of feta. I highly recommend this place for Gyros. Cannot wait to go again and try something else.

Been going here for a few years and would always get the classic gyro. Recently, I decided to mix it up and go with the chicken gyro....best decision of my life! I dream about the chicken gyro now. The chicken is moist, cut into strips, and there is a LOT of it in that sandwich. The pita bread is perfectly soft.

'Best Greek food restaurant I know of. "Soup Nazi's wife" is a very sweet lady. Dont ever ask for ketchup though (as advised by a friend of mine). My husband and I always get they gyro melts and side salads. The Greek dressing is great! The meat on the gyro is always awesome. The parking at the 83rd street location does suck, it is better at 135th. I also don like that they arent open on Sundays. We would probably go more if it was. The desserts are also good if you have the room! Try It!

Luckily, I have not had bad customer service experience like 2 other reviewers here. I'm not sure what I'll do if that happens, because this place is close to me, fairly cheap for the high quality of food you get, and quick. I don't really have much to add that other reviewers haven't already posted. I usually get the standard Gyro sandwich, however the reviewer that said this comes with fresh lettuce and tomatoes is slightly incorrect. The gyros typically come with fresh onions and tomatoes. I have also gotten the Gyro Plate and Combination plate, as well as baklava. All good. Note: They are not open on Sunday.

Okay, it's not terrible. But it's sure not good. And the decor is so cheeseball! This food is not, to my understanding, authentic Greek food at all. Even the Greek salad was off. Their stuffed grape leaves are uninspired. Avoid, avoid.

  • Kasey G.

Okay it is a fast food Greek place but it is pretty freakin awesome. I recently went to the Greek fest a couple of days ago and the food their was probably cooked by little old greek women who have been cooking for ever but I have to say I prefered Mr. Gyro's. I love the Pastichio and the humus there. The Gyros are pretty good as well :)

  • t w.

They have the BEST salad dressing; the kind that makes you eat every last piece of lettuce. Well, today I asked them if they sold it separately, and lo and behold they sold me huge thing of it for only $3.00! I'm going to use this when I entertain, and people will be amazed. I'm going to tell them it's my secret recipe! LOL

I agree with the other positive reviews. I've been going to this place since I was a small child....they used to be located in a much smaller space just a few blocks North on Metcalf and on the opposite side of the street. This is a locally/family owned place. It DOES kind of have a "fast food" feel....but only because you order at a counter and they call your number to pickup your food. The similarities with a fast food restaurant end there. All entrees are delicious. Despite the corny name "Mr. Gyros"....they offer some of the best Greek food in Kansas City. I much prefer this place to Tasso's (unless you want to watch a belly dancer while you eat of course). This is not a fancy place....prepare to be unimpressed with the ambience and decor.....but you came for the food right? You won't be disappointed. Their lamb meat gyro sandwhich is excellent. They make a fantastic greek salad. If you have a little extra time...order the "chicken plate" (it takes about 15 min. for them to make it)...it is really fabulous. Take care not to eat here before you go to a crowded spot for your evening out....you will smell like garlic, onions, and other yumminess until the next morning!

We live in North KC, but have returned to Mr Gyro, because we really like it. The title of the place can be deceiving. The gyro is good, the moussaka is good. The pastries are yummy. The place is clean and neat, and we like the casual atmosphere. May not be the most authentic place, but the food is consistently good.

Mr. Gyro, like the Greeks, has been around for while. Way back in the day, 1982, the place first opened in a little brick shack a few blocks north of their current locale. 20 years later-- why rush a good thing? - they moved into the new digs on the busy corner of 83rd and Metcalf. The custom-built building, modeled on a Greek Temple, may have more atmosphere -- photos of Greek isles line the walls and a video loop of life in the Aegean Sea plays on a flat-screen TV. But the food hasn't changed a bit. Thank goodness. What to order? Look, if a place is called "Mr. Cake" you wouldn't order the pie, right? So there's no sense getting anything besides the gyro at Mr. Gyros. (Okay, you could get the KC Strip Gyro, which uses steak strips of instead of Gyro meat. But, why bother? There's plenty of places in town to get sirloin.) The classic sandwich is thin slices of gyro meat -- a blend of beef and lamb --wrapped in toasted pita bread and topped with fresh lettuce and ripe tomatoes. It's fairly good-sized. Big appetites will want the combo platter -- kind of like a sandwich and a half. Get extra feta cheese and tzatziki (the white sauce made of yogurt and chopped cucumber) so you can slather with abandon. Don't worry, vegetarians. There's love for you too. The dolmades, grape leaves stuffed with seasoned rice, and the spanakopita, a flaky spinach pastry, could make a meal in themselves. Don't forget baklava for dessert. You'll love your sticky fingers.

I've been eating here for years since they serve a pretty decent gyro (hence the brilliant name!) However, my experience yesterday will likely prevent me from going back for some time, if ever. I was treated rudely by the 70s era-AquaNet-frosted-hair lady [Greek?] at the front. She motioned to me and suggested I sit down when I tried to clarify something about my order! Customer service in this day and age is key, and this place certainly doesn't have it.

I was in Overland Park on business, and needed to get away from all the Applebees and Fridays-type restaurants along Metcalf. I was craving some Greek food, and I figured I would give it a shot. It's a great little place! The greek salad was very fresh with lots of oregano, and the dolmades are sooo good and served hot! The employees actually speak Greek here, which I guess is a good indication... and they make fun of people when they walk in to order a "gyro" and pronounce it as it's spelled. That definitely gets this place an extra star!

Quick + healthy + affordable + friendly + delicious = a five star lunch all the way. So back in sixth grade I got really into the The Illiad and The Odyssey, and naturally following that, the country of Greece. We got to pick countries to do reports on and provide food from them, and since, you know, I was only 12 I had no idea how to cook or prepare Greek food. Enter Mr. Gyros, my first taste of a gyro and really anything outside the norm for me at that age. They gave me gyro meat, dolmas, and a whole collection of goodies to serve at the cultural fair, and I only scarfed down about 1/4 of platter before taking it to school. For me, that's a win right there. That was my first taste, and when I used to work in this area, I made many frequent visits to this spot. I'll admit, it had the look and feel of a three star lunch the first time back in, but consistency time after time have them as a favorite lunch spot in town. I'm pretty loyal to the $8.95 lunch special (sandwich + salad), and I always get the chicken breast pita. The chicken is moist, well-flavored, and topped with onions, tomatoes and a delicious tzakiki sauce on the side. The salad is probably my favorite thing on the menu - I could/have/probably shouldn't have drank the dressing before. It's topped with feta, kalamata olives, peppers and is nearly a meal on it's own. The sandwich and salad are more than enough, so you can resist the temptation to get hummus and derail the value lunch. I have to say I've had much better hummus at other places around town, for what it's worth. The menu has a decent amount of offerings, and to each their own on what they order, but I'd stay away from the gyro melt. It's a completely Americanized sandwich covered in melted American cheese - just seems like that shouldn't go on a Mediterranean gyro in my opinion. Some additional offerings will trip the red flag that it's not the most authentic Greek food, but that doesn't change things. If it tastes good, it's worth eating, right? Right now they're only located in the suburbs and seem to be doing well out there (this location and also one near 135th Antioch), so I'd imagine that'll stick for the time being.

I will start by saying I rarely make my way out to this area unless it's for Table Top or Vintage Stock but when I do I love to swing by this place. For the price you really can't beat the quality of the food and how filling it is. It's right on the main strip but almost tucked away on the corner. I definitely got a fast food vibe upon entering the store, the upside is you pay fast food prices for a quality gyro that will fill you up. The employees were very helpful on my first time in there picking out the regular gyro sandwich, which was around $5. My girlfriend and I both got the same thing with extra pita and sauce and the total was around $12 dollars. I absolutely love gyros and you won't find a better one at this price point if you live near by then I'm sure this is already a favorite on your list!

I ordered the lunch special (a sandwich with a small Greek salad) and a fountain drink for a total of just over $11 at the counter. My order was ready in about three minutes. The salad size was generous, the ingredients were fresh, varied, and worked well together. The gyro sandwich was packed with plenty of lean, delicious meat, topped with fresh veggies, and included tasty tzatziki sauce. The service was quick, and friendly. The interior was nicely done, and clean.

  • Vicky T.

Mediocre food; I didn't care too much for their quality. I did not like their tzatziki sauce very much -- a strange sour after-taste. perhaps it was spoiled? the chicken in my chicken sandwich was dry and tasteless, and my salad was drowned in vinaigrette. I do appreciate that their vegetables were fresh versus wilted (therefore, old). I did not have to wait long for my food, and they maintain a very clean, comfortable interior. Tip: they call your order so be sure to grab your ticket after you pay! throw your trash and stack your trays at the garbage that is located facing the entryway (opposite end of the fountain drink dispenser and condiment setup).

Mr. Gyros was a tad disappointing. When I say tad I mean the building is cute inside and out.. I've always wanted to sop and eat here. I'm sad I finally did. First of all the guy greeting us I'm pretty sure doesn't know what a smile is suppose to be. He was on the bossy side, and seemed upset we were deciding what we wanted. When we asked him about a vegetarian gyro he just started telling us about the big meal. He didn't wanna hear anything we had to say.. After we got our food I went back up front to get a spicy sauce like chili sauce or sriracha. He handed me mild taco salsa that had no heat. All in all very upset.

I'm not sure how this place gets the ratings it does. It's fast food Greek at best and there is no value there. Small portions and prices equal to legit Greek. Only been in KC a little over a month but will be on a quest for a gyro I'm use to.

Family favorite for years. Fantastic gyros and were big fans of gyro salads. Splurge and get yourself some baklava.

  • Layne R.

Mr. Gyro's is my go to when I need a gyro fix. I'm a fairly picky eater so their gyro and gyro melt offerings are right up my alley. Pita, gyro meat onion on the regular gyro or cheese on the melt... Can't really screw that up, and they really don't. The gyro is piled pretty high with gyro meat and that pretty much does the trick. You can't go wrong with gyro meat! The melt comes without the onion and tomatoes but adds cheese while the regular gyro is no cheese with tomato and onion. Everything comes with the tzatziki sauce, but i'm not a big fan of tzatziki so I can't really tell you how it is. I'd go higher with my rating but their menu is relatively limited, it seems and so when i go, I know I'm getting one of two things and not trying something new or different. A little more variety might be great. The food is served fast-food style (order at the counter, get your drink, get called when your order is ready) and is served quickly. The cashier is always polite and keeps things moving. They give you plastic cups when you order a drink and they could be bigger cups so you will be getting a refill... plus they aren't the most stable cups so when you push it against the drink dispenser thing to fill it, it bends instead of pushing the dispenser tab thing... The cup situation could be improved. I've seen people complain about parking but I have never had an issue. They recently renovated the interior to make it a little more nice looking, though I thought it was fine before if not just a little dated. When i want a gyro, this is my place to make it happen. It's solid food and I'm always leaving happy.

Mr. Gyros is good. The prices are reasonable and the quality is good. They don't have a huge menu, but there's a pretty good selection for this type of restaurant.

Love this place! I am always super nervous to try new places but I am so glad my cousin dragged me here! I think I told her about 15 times while we were eating, this is so good! I just kept repeating it! Anyway I tried the KC Strip option and I absolutely loved it! If you go here and you aren't sure about trying Greek food start with that. I can not wait to go back!!

  • Jocelyn S.

This place has become so hit and miss. It can be incredible or severely burned and disappointing. I love the moussaka but lately whenever I get it, it's so overdone. The pita and red pepper hummus are always incredible.

I hadn't been to Mr. Gyros in probably about 4 or 5 years, but the hubby wanted to check them out again, so off we went. Part of the reason I hadn't rushed right back, even though they're in my neighborhood, is that I had remembered them as having mediocre food. Unfortunately, this hasn't changed. I ordered the gyros platter which came with a pile of gyros meat, tomato and onion slices, four small pieces of pita, a couple of hunks of feta, a tiny serving of tzatziki sauce and kalamata olives. The gyros meat had a nice flavor, but it was overly dried out; so much so that the edges were curling up and you could see dry spots on the meat. The olives were the best part of the meal, although the tzatziki sauce was good, just not plentiful. I ordered a custard dessert with a really long Greek name. It looked really good in the display case, but sadly, the execution was not good. It came topped with phyllo which was completely soggy and had to be removed because it was pretty icky to eat. The custard itself lacked flavor. So overall, the food is definitely 2 stars and no more. But for fast food...and it really is pretty darn fast, it's not so bad. The employees here are incredibly nice, so the service garners them a 3rd star. Also, they have recently remodeled the interior and it looks fresh and clean. They have added fake stone work which looks a bit cheesy and some of the decorating touches are just not appealing to me, but it's an upgrade, anyway. Their new chairs are fairly comfortable and are really pretty. I may try to sneak out with a couple the next time I go!

Unfortunately all of the charm has been sucked out of one of my fave OP spots. Gone is the charm and old school allure. Mr Gyros has been remodeled to resemble something like a shopping mall food court. It's brutal. I immediately felt sad when confronted w the change. The food is still good tho. Although why they refuse to cut the tomatoes on the gyros when asked is STRAIGHT UP baffling. 2 stars for the food. -3 stars for the change. As snoopy would say: "Blaaaaaaah"

    (2)
  • Lee P.

I like the new digs. For some reason the food wasn't as good. Mostly because it wasn't hot. Realize that compared to other Gyros this is still the best in town. Compared to mr. Gyros I feel they coukd have done a little better. Thus the 4 stars. Attention to detail has been and always will be the key to great food. I will be back to see if my food will be hit next time. Love the meat.

Whenever I must have a gyro, I make my way here. The food is great quality. Its good sized portions. I literally have nothing bad to say about them The gyro melt is great and their hummus is mighty awesome as well. If you like this cuisine and are looking for a filling quick lunch, just do it.

Nice renovation! The salad was SO good, as were the stuffed grape leaves. The moussaka was bland and tasted pasty. Wish they had metal utensils instead of the plastic, but overall, enjoyed the dinner.

  • Thomas M.

I enjoyed my trip here. The service was good, and the store was very clean and enjoyable with a "Greek video" showing notable picturesque Greek destinations. I ordered the moussaka. It came with a side of dolmades that were tender and tasted so good with fresh squeezed lemon. There was also a really nice Greek salad. I couldn't stop eating the salad. I almost let the moussaka get cold. The moussaka was very nice. The eggplant was cooked perfectly. The lamb was well seasoned, and the bechamel sauce was fluffy. I was well satisfied with this dish. It was a good bang for the buck with the two sides.

    (4)
  • Ciara S.

The service was mad. The staff was rude. Their selection was not what I expected, no lamb, falafel, or hot sauce. I'll stay on the Missouri side next time i want greek food.

  • Brenda M.

This is my favorite place for Greek food. The gyro sandwich is the best I've had in KC and have never had a bad meal here. The service is not overly friendly or attentive but they always take my order quickly and my food comes out quickly as well. You order and pay at the register like a fast food place and they call out your order over speakers. I love that they have the dessert case right in the front of the cash register for you to see. I love the galaktoboureko, its a sweet custard topped with phyllo drenched with a honey sauce. This last time I went, I was pleasantly surprised with their newly renovated interior, very modern, cute, and plenty of seating. As for the gyro meat, it's fresh, very well seasoned, and the portions are big, I always have to eat a few slices of the gyro meat before I can actually pick up the sandwich without all the contents spilling out, the tzatziki sauce is out of this world good. And for all those first timers, they do not open on Sundays.

I love this place. I crave it when I want something healthyish for takeout. I especially love their salads. The chicken pita and pasticchio are favorites, too.

  • Paul M.

Clean, enjoyable, yummy food! I always get a salad there and I'm not much of a salad guy, so that says something! The one drawback is the place is difficult to get in and out of the parking lot. Left turns--forget it. But that's a problem with Overland Park, not the restaurant. Just prepare for it and you'll be great!

Is pronounced hero, or guy-ro? Or is it just delicious? Mr. Gyro is good fast Greek food. Even with long lines they get you in and out. The prices are fair and the decor is great. If you are tired of the same old thing for lunch this is a definite stop.

I would not call myself a Greek food connoisseur, but I do enjoy Mr. Gyro. We moved off of Metcalf in 2005 and this became one of our usual places for take out. I typically order a beef kabob and my wife usually gets a gyro melt. The pita is always soft and fresh. The beef is always tender and juicy. I think their gyro meat is delicious and flavorful. I do find it a but greasy. Some may be put off by this. Some have written about the onion/tomato/meat ratio on the gyro plates. I do find it a bit off balance so I remedy this by ordering extra sauce and enjoying the veggies, sauce and pita. Sometimes we order dessert. The dessert selections are great. There is one custard dessert that I really enjoy that does tend to be hit or miss. Every now and then it tastes like scrambled eggs. But it's so good when it's right that I just keep trying! Our order is usually taken to-go. The dining room is fairly large and clean but it it's typically very busy when we place our order. Their lot is small so be prepared to walk a few blocks if you come during peak times.

Mr. Gyro is consistently a great place to find fast, great Greek food in Overland Park. This location on Metcalf really gets busy during lunch and dinner - it's worth that wait, however, if you can find a spot in their tiny lot. Peddling everything from gyros to hummus, moussaka to horiatiki salad, Mr. Gyros knows their stuff. My only complaint is the oversized gyros. It's tricky to find a good way to eat the meat stuffed pita with onions and tomatoes. Maybe a bigger pita? This is a nit picky thing and really doesn't detract from the taste/quality. There aren't many good choices for Greek in Kansas City, but Mr. Gyro easily gets a gold star for their Hellenistic delicacies.

Good solid basic Greek food. Enjoy the Gyros. This place reminds me of the Gyro shops we used to frequent back in NY. Come early for lunch though. The parking lot is small, and it's packed after 11:30.

Three Words: Fast-Food Greek. It's the McDonald's equivalent to Gyros. Tasty but not spectacular. (I have nothing against McDonalds but it's no Topeka Burger Stand burger.) And, there was a nice black hair sitting on top of my Tzadziki sauce. Egh. I got over it and got some from my dining companion but it was kinda gross, right? I think next time I'll be going to a sit-down Greek establishment.

I've been going to Mr. Gyros since I was a child. They have great food. I am a huge fan of the pastichio, dolmades, mousaka, gyros and several of their delicious pastries. I've never ordered something I didn't like. I am no expert on Greek cuisine, but it is the best I've had really. Everything is always cooked and seasoned well. The lamb is tender and flavorful. The inside is not much to look at, but always seems very clean. The service is friendly and fast. Great for take out.

Ambience You order at the counter. The dining room feels a little sterile and for some odd reason they are using tv's with a greek slideshow to make up for decor. Food- This place is so fresh. Portions are huge. The tomatoes are juicy, lettuce is crispy and the pita's are warm. Unlike some other gyro places, this food is flavorful- even the greek salad. The one thing that bums me out is no french fries. When I traveled around Greece, you couldn't find a restaurant that didn't pile fries on top of every dish you ordered- especially gyros. I don't always want fries, but I really wish they were an option. Service is fast.

My only complaint is that they don't have fries here. I know that's totally an uninformed American thing to say, but when I have a gyro, I want some fries with that. That said, this place serves really good food at a fair price. The service is quick and the dessert case just entices you to go back for a small nauche on your way out the door. I ordered the gyro plate and came away with much to much food for lunch. If your eating in a duo, you can easily share a salad and each get a gyro and be quite satisfied.

The first time ever came to this place was about 10 years ago. I had never eaten Greek food and since then I make a habit of coming as often as I can. The food was fantastic and just like any other restaurant if you see a bunch of Mexican guys in the kitchen it likely means that the food is good. Even now that I find myself watching my weight this is a great choice. The kids really enjoy it as well and the quality has never diminished. Five stars all around. This place tends to get really packed sometimes so be sure to call your order in ahead. And I warn you you're going to have a hard time walking out without some of their delicious pastries.

Yes, once in a while I travel outside of the tiny radius in which I exist. I will especially do this for Mr. Gyro's. This is very good cheap food. I love the grilled chicken platter which is a heaping Greek salad, grilled chicken tenders which have been basted with a very good seasoning and some pita bread. The gyros are very good here and if you get there for lunch you can usually score a special which is a gyro, a salad and a drink for cheap.

Mr Gyro has yummy food and great prices and they are quick quick quick. They also have super yummy authentic Greek desserts. They do a bang up business for lunch and dinner.

Warm mouth watering pita bread! This was my first visit but I've always noticed how packed the restaurant was.... And for good reason! Salad/sandwich lunch special was great!

decent prices, decent food, not great in terms of presentation (for the sandwiches at least) but the hummus was nice. actually the hummus was the best i've had in town so far. they own the dessert options, dare i say baklava kings? chocolate baklava & coconut baklava were amazing, and i've had baklava in greece and turkey. they don't have the best gyro in town but they do have the best dessert

Solid Greek fast food. The daily special is a little pricey. A Gyro, Greek salad, and a small drink is $9.82 total at the time I write this. I always like the ones that put the sandwich together for you and wrap it so it's ready to eat. This place pretty much just lays out the pita, places a few onions and tomatoes on it, and then piles the meat on. The Greek salad is very good. Not the best cause they're stingy with the olives, but very good. All the ingredients are there with plenty of Feta. Satisfies my Greek fetish;-)

Greek, fast-food style. You get your order on styrofoam plates on a cafeteria tray. The dining room is crowded, you may have to table-stalk for a bit during lunch rush, but tables are cleaned & bussed quickly to give you a fair chance. We split the lunch special & a side of hummus. Overall, very good! The gyro meat was delicious, perfectly seasoned -- the salad was crispy & fresh, with a generous layer of feta (yum) and an even more generous dousing of dressing (ugh.) Next time I'll ask for the dressing on the side. The hummus, strangely for a restaurant with so much other awesome, was just kind of... off. Too much lemon & not enough tahini, or something. It wasn't inedible, but it's unlikely that I'll order it again. They lose a point for the awful parking lot. Get there early, go to side streets, or be very lucky... those are pretty much your options.

The tzatziki sauce is just so good -- maybe my favorite in KC. I like to order the gyro salad. You get a HUGE salad with plenty of gyro meat, plus pita. Look at that, you just made yourself a gyro with a side salad! Be sure to ask for tzatziki, though, because this doesn't come with it.

First time here and it was a great experience. I tired the grilled chicken plate and my husband had the traditional gyro plate. Both were good sized and very tasty. The meats were flavorful and moist. The pita bread was warm and veggies were fresh. We also shared the roasted red pepper hummus which was very good too. After our meal we were full but the desserts were too tempting to pass up. We shared the baklava and the chocolate almond roll. Both were absolutely wonderful. I loved the chocolate almond filling in the roll. The service was semi friendly and food came out within about 10 minutes. I'm sure I'll be back at some point and wish it was a little closer to my place.

I went here last night. Had a salad, moussaka and gyro melt to go. It was delicious. I eat at Mr. Gyro at least once a month and have never had a bad experience. Good dolmates and hummus.

I love this place. It's like I walked into the film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Authentic music, nice decor, Greek family running in the back, 2 big screens that show travel footage from Greece. The food is delicious. I've had various gyros and platters. Today I had the chicken gyro with a side salad. You get a lot of food for your money. The chicken gyro was flavorful and fresh. The Tzatziki sauce is delicious. Just the right blend of dill, cucumber...has a nice tangy kick to it. The salad is great too. Onion, cucumber, kalamata olives, and tomatoes included. Here's a little advice though folks: Don't come here if you want to be a sexy kitten for your lover, or if you want to impress a client. Bring a bib dude. The gyro is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to eat with class or dignity! It's huge and awkward. Most of it fell onto my black dress and the floor. And I had sauce dripping onto my chin. Some lovers might think that's really hot though. Use discretion. The guy who looked like ZZ TOP sitting next to me tackled it like a pro. He downed it in four bites in 60 seconds. Maybe that's the way to do it, ya? I was in good company. With ZZ TOP and the guy who LICKED his plate sitting next to me...it didn't matter that I was covered in Tzatziki sauce yo. OPAH!!!!

Make a point to come to Mr. Gyro when I'm in town (which has been a recurring theme the past few months). Love the fresh pita and humus and the veggie gyro. you get enough to fill you up, which is a plus. It is a little pricey though. On the flip side, however, food is good and very quick service!

what happened? growing up in KC I LOVED this place. I used to crave their gyros. then I went last week and pretty much decided that it would probably be the last time I ate there. maybe I been spoiled by all of the incredible Mediterranean restaurants in Portland. the service was good. and we received our food pretty quickly, but the quality of everything just wasn't as good as I remembered. I ordered the grilled chicken plate and my husband ordered the gyro salad. both were pretty bland and tasteless (except for the tsaziki sauce), the veggies did not taste that fresh and my chicken was a bit on the undercooked side. the gyro meat was pretty tasteless as well, but at least it was fully cooked. the baklava was pretty good though, but I wouldn't make a special trip to get it.

I think this place is great and actually my wife agrees with me. It is fast and courteous service. The place is spotless clean and a nice comfortable dining area. It's not a fancy place just well kept. They have the best selection on Greek food you can imagine along with Greek pastries. When in the area we always make it a point to eat here. The Gyro platter is the thing to get for sure.

Leave it to us to spend $30 at a casual dining Greek restaurant. But, I did. And it was worth it. After reading all of the reviews and looking over the menu, I just couldn't decide. I ordered the Gyro sandwich, the boyfriend ordered the Gyro melt (Gyro with melted cheese), we shared a side salad, hummus, and I have always wanted to try dolmades, so I tried those too, even though they were a pricey $3.75 for three. First, the small side salad was very good! We shared it, and it was a nice sample for both of us. The dressing was light but a flavorful vinaigrette. We then tried the dolmades, which are grape leaves stuffed with rice and ground beef. (There's also an option for a dolmades plate- which I can see would be very filling). A great little sample of a Greek treat. The hummus was fresh but unremarkable, served with fresh pita bread. I probably wouldn't order it again. (Disclaimer- we did order the regular hummus vs. the olive or red pepper). Our gyros were fabulous. Big chunks of lamb/beef meat, fresh, red tomatoes and rings of crisp onion. Feta was 1.50 extra, but the tziaztki came with it and was wonderfully flavorful. The food came out fast and fresh and was super yummy. We were stuffed and will definitely be back!

I love this place! I've never had anything less than wonderful. The parking kind of stinks when they are busy, but the walk is well worth it. My favorites: chicken pita, chicken plate, Greek salad, and the traditional hummus. I probably order this place 2-3 times per month, if that gives you any indication of how great it is!

  • Andrew H.

They have the best dolmades I've ever had. I don't know what makes it different (I think they put meat in it) but its soooo good! Their chicken souvlaki is very delicious too, though it takes longer to make. Finally, their tzatziki sauce goes great with the pita bread and the chicken.

I don't eat typical fast food, but this is the type of fast food I enjoy. I'm always happy with what I get when I go, and if I don't feel like sit-down Greek, this is a great alternative. Sometimes I just want to sit on my butt, watch what's recorded on my DVR that week, and eat my ginormous gyro. Mr. Gyro's is perfect for that. I actually don't know that I've ever actually eaten AT Mr. Gyro's before. They are nice enough too. They are efficient in moving people through the line without being rude. I once heard the manager answer a call (while I was waiting for my food) with a person on the line who wanted him to describe each of the Greek pastries that were offered. He did it, and he didn't sound annoyed at all (which I would have been had it been me; Me: "Hey, you're already coming down here to pick up dinner, why don't you just look at them yourself when you get here.")

  • Chef C.

Quick, accurate, inexpensive, and most of all tasty! I do branch out and always try to pick something new from their delicious pastry display, and I highly recommend trying one of their spanakopita or a baklava for dessert. Beware of the seeds in the kalamata olives, but other than that, for the price, the quality is exceeded.

Mr. Gyros is a long-time favorite of ours, and the quality of the food has remained steady over the years. Time flies. We've been going since the late 1980s, when they were in that Avis rent-a-car building across the street. The combination plate is my favorite, with Pastichio (a beef and macaroni casserole with a cream topping and a hint of cinnamon), some Dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with beef and rice and served with lemons that you squeeze over them), plus gyro meat and a Spanakopita (spinach pastry). For dessert, it's a Galaktoboureko (custard strudel and honey) or a Baklava. The pastries are very good. My only issue with Mr. Gyros is that their gyro meat is sometimes cold and a bit hard rather than hot and juicy, probably from it being a tad bit overdone. Parking on the small lot out back is an issue at peak hours. Either get here early, or be prepared to park on the street and do some walking. This place is often jammed at lunch time, and for good reason. Plan accordingly. We do love this place, and hey... as long as you're opening new locations, would you PLEASE open up one north of the river, say, around Barry Road???

  • Joel S.

It's rare I find an gyro I don't enjoy. As long as the bread isn't stale, the tzatziki is cold, the meat is hot, I'm probably going to be happy with it. Mr. Gyro makes a tasty one (the regular gyro sandwich - shoot me if I ever get an "gyro melt" or an gyro with steak), though there are certain mechanical considerations that need to be taken into account - your pita needs to be large enough to contain the (admittedly generous) helping of meat. You can't pick this up. Gyros are hand food, but you need to eat this with knife and fork. But the ingredients are decent. Where Mr. Gyro's suffers is in the hummus. Unlike with gyros, I'm extremely picky about hummus. It must be creamy and there needs to be that tahini flavor in there. A lot of garlic is a plus, too. This stuff tasted like Athenos or some other run-of-the-mill hummus you'd find in a grocery store. To make matters worse, they drowned it in Italian dressing, as if an implicit admission that the hummus is too bland to be served on its own, or even drizzled in olive oil. Another strike against it is price. I spent $12 for an gyro sandwich, a drink and a side of hummus and pita. I can get the same exact meal (albeit a better one) at Habashi House in City Market for about $9. If I found myself in the area and hungry, I'd probably go back. But it's certainly not the best out there.

During my 3 years living in OP, KS I must have eaten here 30 times. It's quick, it's frand yummy Greek fast food. The chicken gyro salad was my favorite. Lots of lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, green pepper cucumber yogurt sauce, greek dressing, fluffy pita and strips of meat. It's cheap and filling, though I'm sure not the best health-wise. Overall, everything is good, although I have a sneaking suspicion the desserts aren't made fresh everyday, though are very pretty, and if you get them on a good day, are the perfect ending to a nice meal.

  • Ryan A.

Food's ok. The place is aptly named, since they basically don't serve any Greek entrees that aren't either an actual gyro or something closely resembling an gyro. Their souvlaki is essentially a steak-bits gyro rather than a skewered-meat main course with a starchy side. I suppose the pita could be considered a side. Anyway, the menu claims it is tenderloin, but it sure tastes like sirloin to me. The KC strip gyro shows medium to medium rare in the picture menu hanging over the counter, but it won't actually come out anywhere near medium rare. I guess it's still tasty enough, if dry, but I've always been disappointed in it. Maybe I'm crazy, but I figure the pictures should not misrepresent the product. The gyro melt is just bad. I've tried twice and can barely finish it. It's not that it tastes bad, but there's something about covering already-greasy gyro meat with the oil from several slices of melted cheese that makes it hard for me to choke down. At least break it up with some onion or something. If you can avoid the rude and insane mega-perm lady, and go in expecting a basic gyro and not much else in the way of Greek cuisine outside a couple appetizers and pastries, it's not a bad place. Probably the best thing I can say about it is that it is fast and cheap, which is why I so often stop in for a quick, cheap gyro when I'm in a hurry to get somewhere else.

I'm laughing as I write this. The food was okay, but the lady at the front was very brusque when my husband asked for more tzatziki sauce. She said "that'll be extra,, this stuff costs me money to make!!".Well, okay but we suddenly lost our taste for their tzatziki. Then I read the above reviewer'e comparison with the soup nazi. Still laughing, brother! !!

I was trying to think of a place to eat today. This place needed to be something tasty, yet inexpensive. This place also needed something slightly out of the norm. This place, once I thought about it a while, turned out to be Mr. Gyros. It totally hit the spot. I ordered the gyro platter and side salad and was stuffed. I highly recommend this fine establishment.

  • Vanessa N.

I often crave gyros. This is not the best place for them, but it is not the worst either. It is a bit far from my work, but once in a while, I just really want some Mr. Gyros. I call my order in, and by the time I arrive, it's ready. Which is awesome because the line at lunch hour is nuts. The gyros are good, the salad is good, the hummus is good. I like the selection of desserts, as well. Probably the only draw-back for me, is the parking. It is so difficult to find a spot when they're busy. What an itty bitty lot. But hey, if you're looking to grab some Greek, this place does it for a good price, and efficiently.

Mr. Gyro's is the hidden treasure of Metcalf Rd. In a building that one friend described to me as looking like on "old bank" Mr. Gyros is designed like an old Greek coliseum form the time of the Roman empire. Ass you might have guessed, Mr. Gyros is a Greek restaurant and they specialize in... GYROS!! I have had numerous plates and the Gyro melt is my favorite, followed by the gyro salad and the gyro platter at a close third. They also carry different Greek-inspired desserts and sweets tiramisu and assorted pastries. The atmosphere is not that of a sit-down restaurant, but more of a fast food hybrid like Fazzoli's or the newly remodeled McDonald's in Leawood. There are however, HD televisions that play gorgeous video and photos from Greece. It makes it feel very authentic and is fun to watch while dining or waiting for your meal. If you care to enjoy your cultural cuisine in the comfort of your own home, feel free to get your order to go as it takes less than 5 minutes (generally) to prepare. I highly recommend Mr. Gyros to anyone who enjoys easy and quick Greek food, or simply a taste for something different.

I always opt for the gyro melt. I feel somewhat sacrilegious eating a gyro layered with melted cheese, but whatev. I always complement my gyro with their greek salad in a poor attempt to nullify the ill effects of my glutonous cheese-glazed gyro and it never disappoints. Fresh veggies + pillowy soft pita's + uber tasty lamb = can't miss. This place is always busy, yet I never seem to be waiting for very long. Employees seemingly take a lot of pride in their restaurant. The dining room cleanliness is borderline obsessive-compulsive. A few notes: Be conservative with the Tzatziki. Theirs is rather potent. If you make the mistake of drowning your gyro in this stuff, the taste will linger for 2 days (is that a bad thing?). Parking sucks. The restaurant seats like 75+ people, yet there are only 20 parking spots (give or take). Someone didn't do the math on that one...

I am a Greek Food Fan. Yes, I am. For reals. And dining at Mr. Gyro's since moving here to KC hasn't changed those feelings. I have tried a few other places (not naming names cause they were so forgettable I cannot remember them) but nothing compares. I order the same thing generally speaking - a gyro and their side salad. The salad is always delicious - though they are sometimes a little heavy handed with the dressing - and crisp and fresh. The gyros are always delicious - soft pillowy pita, lots of meat - so much I have to remove a lot of it to so I can eat the gyro as a gyro (I add it to my salad or eat the meat straight up with tzatziki), and delicious sauce - I order an extra cause I like it on my salad. The service is fast and friendly, the portions are truly generous, and the restaurant is clean. Delicious! okaybye.

Mr. Gyro's is fresh in my mind, because I enjoyed it for lunch today. I find myself there probably about once a month to get my Greek fix...maybe not the month of June, because we go to the Greek Festival at the church on 95th! Anyway, as always, excellent quality of ingredients, copious amounts of food, speedy service, and very clean atmosphere. I usually get a gyro, side salad, spanikopita, and some sort of dessert. It's a lot of food...my dessert waits until later. The gyro is excellent. I've been stuck on chicken gyros for awhile, but today went with the regular, and was not disappointed one bit. I LOVE their salads. All the feta they put on, plus the dressing really make it. Besides gyros of various kinds, they have souvlaki, mousaka, pastichio, dolmades, and more. The selection of pastries is great too. At least 10 different Greek pastries, and they all are good. The galaktoboureko (spelling?) is outstanding...eggy custard, honey good-ness. My only complaint is parking during busy times, but I usually can find a spot if I circle a time or two.

I'm eating a Gyros sandwich as I type. The place is clean and run well. The prices are good the food is OK. I have eaten here several times. One problem is the sliced tomatoes that are a main part of the sandwich are hard and green (not ripe). Fortunately at home I had some nice ripe tomatoes that I cut up, and throw the hard green ones away. The meat is OK, the pita is OK and the sauce is OK. Nothing great, just OK. I wish I knew of a better Greek restaurant?

  • B S.

Have gone here for years. The food is ALWAYS good. Never a single complaint about any of it. The gyro sandwich and Greek salad combo is a good deal. Big portions. Don't know why anyone would leave a bad review of this restaurant.

  • Steven M.

Yum yum yum. "Honey, where can I take you to eat tonight?" Thats the question that started my glorious introduction to Gyros. I know I know - who hasn't had a gyro yet. Well - I hadn't. I have no excuses... I ordered simple - A gyro sandwich with some traditional pita and hummus. I was sucking on my fingers after I finished this intriguing array of well seasoned (not too strong, no too soft) meat covered with fresh onions and a tomato served on warm, soft pita bread. I downed it with an iced tea and had some hummus to finish her off. I'll be making excuses to head back to Mr. G's asap - that was some tasty stuff.

The location on 135th street is managed infinitely better than the other location on 83rd and Metcalf: it is cleaner, has a more pleasant appearance, parking is much better. Most importantly, the staff at the 135th Street location are FAST, young, and have good customer service skills. When I lived near the 83rd St store I quit going there because I got tired of waiting 15 minutes to get my order. I never have to wait longer than 5 minutes at the 135th store! I eat at Mr. Gyros about twice a week, I think it is about the best inexpensive, healthy take-out you can get in the area.

This place is not fair. And apparently, I'm not the only one on here who has a thought or two on the Soup Nazi's Wife. (A.K.A. the evil wannabe Greek lady running the store.) Let me make one thing clear. The food is so darn delicious. The desert's are amazing. And the quality of their veggies is superb. So why the heck does a place with such slap yo momma good food have a star on it's review? The Soup Nazi's wife works here. She's an evil, wannabe Greek lady that works in the back. She's always high strung, stressed and looks like she needs a prescription strength Tabasco enema. I used to come here on Monday night's and order the Gyro plate with extra Gyro meat. With extra gyro meat, it's enough to split with someone and be extremely stuffed. We love to cook at home, however when we eat out, the most frustrating thing is to spend your hard earned money and still be hungry. Carrot Top (or the young Greek guy with the Zohan-like hair) was always willing to comply with my request, charge me extra for the extra gyro meat (as expected anywhere else) and make me a happy customer. So one time I walked in with a co-worker with the suggestion that this place was awesome (again, the food is AWESOME) He places his order with a credit card, and I place my order. There was a noob at the register and of course he was unaware of how to charge me for a Gyro plate with extra meat. So he goes over to the soup Nazi and ask her how to do it. She confronts me directly and says "We do not sell the gyro plate with extra gyro meat". And I told her, yes, I do it all the time. She had the audacity, nerve and testicular fortitude to tell me, in front of ELEVEN other customers behind me in line, that she was going to call her husband to find out. So she comes back to argue again and say I was wrong. So she goes back to the kitchen, and the noob at the register is clueless wondering what to do. I told him angrily to just give me the darn gyro plate. Had my friend not paid for with a card, he was to the point he wanted to get a refund himself. One of the few times I had totally lost my appetite before eating. I felt humiliated, and in turn I have not brought my business back and I never will again.

    (1)
  • Olathe R.

I complained about the SOUR FOOD (RANCID?) & was told that "this happens all the time, & we usually don't do refunds. We just give a free dessert." Um... it happens all the time? I literally returned my whole plate (minus 2 bites). And the free dessert? Dried out, old chocolate cake. I'll never be back, & it changes the way I feel about ALL Mr. Gyro's. (p.s. When I asked for a manager, I was told that they didn't have any.) It showed!

I must say that Mr. Gyros has been a common stop on my rotation lately. Their lunch special is always the same: any sandwich with a side salad for $7.75. I opt for the gyro which is absolutely delicious. It consists of a soft pita wrapped around a copious amount of meat with onions and tomatoes. It comes with a side of homemade tzatziki and the side salad which is made up of lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, Kalamata olives, feta, a pepperoncini, and a delicious Greek vinaigrette (jeez, did I forget anything?). I've also had the Combo plate. I believe it costs 50¢ more than the lunch special and includes gyro meat, a pita - cut up, a spanakopita, a dolmade, a square of pastichio, along with the ubiquitous tzatziki, a few green pepper rings and cucumber slices. Everything on this plate was quite tasty as well although the pastichio was a little heavy on the bechamel for my tastes. Overall I can't recommend Mr. Gyro's highly enough PS - I've never had a problem with the service. While they may not be overly enthusiastic, everything has been handled simply and quickly. PPS - Parking can be a real SOB during lunch so you may need to park on the street that curves up to the north of the restaurant - Overland Park Dr. I believe.
